Angels We Have Heard on High
Composer Notes
Based on a traditional French melody, this arrangement of "Angels We Have Heard on High" runs the gamut from a George Winston-inspired opening to a closing more akin to the grand works of Handel. The driving rhythm of the left hand sets the foundation for the bell-like right hand of the intro. The pulsating energy continues as the melody rings out over the unceasing flow of eighth notes. A sense of unbridled joy permeates the music culminating in a grand finale that is fitting for the coronation of a King! I was drawn to arrange this hymn by memories of singing the wonderful "Gloria" section at Christmas concerts throughout my school years. There is something almost infectious about the cascade of notes, each melisma feeling like an explosion of happiness that cannot be contained. It is this quality that I tried to capture in my arrangement.
