Composer Notes:

I’m sure I heard this children’s nursery rhyme when I was much, much, much younger, but I can’t say that was the reason I chose to write this arrangement. Five By Design (the vocal ensemble I’m a part of) was working on putting together a new show with music drawn from the late 50s to the early 60s and we were using the UltraLounge CD series as a point of departure. Tiki culture was all the rage and we set about selecting music that would represent the broad spectrum of exotica, mambo and lounge music popular at the time. One day I heard a fragment of the melody in my head, but in a minor key. About 24 hours later I had the vocals arranged and brought it to the group. I also needed to come up with some additional lyrics to fit the theme of the show, referencing Martin Denny and Juan Esquivel (popular composers of the time), and trips to the tropical islands…or at least dreaming of them from the comfort of suburbia.
