A very dramatic work from the opening dissonant chords in the right hand to the final, unresolved chord at the end. The middle section offers a little relief from the dark tone of the piece as the left hand crosses over the right to play in the upper register, but it is not to last. As it reaches a peak, there is a sudden pause, followed by a twisting descent back to the opening material. The ominous octaves in the left hand return and there is no sense of resolution…just one last unanswered question.
