Op. 2, No. 19

Composer Notes

In writing this prelude, I imagined a conversation taking place in the right hand while the left hand’s sudden shifts in harmony on the third beats lent a slightly unbalanced feel, as if the dialogue was taking place on a dance floor and every once in a while the couple would lose their footing for a moment. Eventually the dancers make their way to a table where they take a seat and catch their breath.

While this piece is not terribly complex from a harmonic standpoint, I enjoy the interplay between the hands. The shorter phrases of the opening give way to longer, more fluid lines in the middle section. When the opening material returns, it has been transformed to combine the two.
