A feeling of heartbreak pervades this piece, and yet it is not hopeless…just accepting.  However, this understanding is tested in the middle where anger surfaces for a moment before returning to the opening mood of sorrow and loss emphasized by the single tear falling at the end. The use of chords in close position is the result of years of writing arrangements for the five-part vocal group of which I was a member. I always liked the sound of voices close to one another and I enjoy it in this piece as well.
